LEXINGTON, VA (November 12, 2005) - The Case Western Reserve Spartans finished off the 2005 season with a tough 34-10 loss to the Washington & Lee Generals in Lexington, VA this afternoon. The Spartans nearly out gained the Generals in total offense, with Case racking up 247 total yards compared to 290 for Washington & Lee.
The Spartans won their first three games of the year, but lost their final seven to finish 3-7 (0-3 UAA). Meanwhile, the Generals complete the 2005 season with a 7-3 mark.
Case struck first with a score on their initial possession in the contest. Spartan quarterback Stephen Johnson (Junction City, OR), starting in his first game for the Case, dialed up wide receiver Joseph Brenner (Lititz, PA) for a 65-yard touchdown pass. Johnson finished the day 20 of 36 passing for 210 yards with the one touchdown and one interception. Brenner led the Spartan receivers with 67 yards on two receptions.
The Spartan lead didn't last long however. Washington & Lee scored on three consecutive drives to build a 21-7 advantage in the second quarter. Stuart Sitterson tied the game up with a one-yard touchdown run with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter. Then the Generals quarterback Greg Tweardy threw for two touchdown passes. First he hit Colton Ward on a 26-yard touchdown pass and on the next drive he hooked up with Jack Martin for a 23-yard score. At halftime, the Generals held a 21-7 lead over Case.
The Spartans received the ball to start the second half and it looked like Case might get back into the game. They drove the ball down to the Generals five yard line but couldn't punch the ball into the end zone. The Spartans settled for a 22-yard Brian Calderone (Broadview Hts., OH) field goal to make the score 21-10.
Washington & Lee sealed the victory with two fourth quarter touchdowns. The first was a nine-yard Tweardy to Martin touchdown pass after the Spartans turned the ball over on downs on their own 25 yard line. The final Washington & Lee score came when Chris Prugar blocked a Calderone punt and Chris Joseph recovered the ball in the end zone for a Generals touchdown. The score then stood at 34-10 which proved to be the final result.
Case freshman running back Dan Van Dyke (Sandy Lake, PA) led Case with 62 yards rushing on 14 carries. Marshaun Minter (South Euclid, OH) had a game-high six receptions for the Spartans. Defensively, John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) had a team-high nine tackles on the game.
Washington & Lee was led by Tweardy who was 16 for 23 passing for 201 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, Sitterson carried the ball 11 times for 46 yards. Martin hauled in four catches for 65 yards to lead the Generals in receiving yards. Zach Wall had a game-high 12 total tackles for Washington & Lee.
