SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2005


CHICAGO, IL (November 5, 2005)
- The Case Western Reserve University football team lost a close one this afternoon in Chicago, falling 14-7 to 2005 University Athletic Association champion’s the University of Chicago at Stagg Field. Case drops to 3-6 on the year, and finishes 0-3 in the UAA. Chicago improves to 4-4 and finishes 3-0 in the Association.

Case will end their season on November 12 when they travel to Washington & Lee College for a 1:00 p.m. game.

The Maroons used the running game to take a 7-0 lead into the half. Junior running back Nick Schey (Barrington, IL) had 20 carries for 125 yards in the first half, including a 40 yard touchdown run at the 5:03 mark in the first quarter. It capped off an eight play, 91 yard drive (4:20 minutes). Senior kicker Mike Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL) connected on the point after. Schey finished the game with 40 carries for 211 yards. The Maroons ran the ball 28 times for 134 yards in the half (56-255 for the game) compared to the Spartans 12 carries for just two-yards (24-40). The home team also came out ahead in time of possession in the first 30 minutes of play 20:05 to 9:55 (38:08-21:52).

Case took advantage of a Chicago fumble on a punt with 7:33 on the clock in the third quarter. After senior defensive back Santo Maimone (Eastlake, OH) recovered it, the Spartans finished off a four play, 44 yard drive (1:39) with a 30 yard senior quarterback Alex Harvey (Dunnellon, FL) touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Scott Moyer (Zanesville, OH). The point after, which tied the game at seven a piece, was made by sophomore kicker Brian Calderone (Broadview Hts., OH). Harvey finished the day 15 of 34 for 191 yards. Maimone would help out defensively once more in the third. He blocked a Morzenti 34 yard field goal attempt at the end of the third quarter (00:05) to keep the game at a 7-7 stalemate.

The Maroons began the fourth quarter with their second touchdown on the ground. Freshman running back Chuck Little (Plano, TX) ran one in from two yards out (4 plays, 43 yards, 1:47) and Morzenti connected on the point after to give Chicago a 14-7 advantage. Case had the ball inside the Chicago 20 with 6:37 left in the game, but Harvey’s first interception and Maroon senior defensive back Colin Carrier’s (Glen Ellyn, IL) third pick of the day ended that drive. The Spartans did get the ball back at the 1:53 mark, but went out on four downs, dropping their sixth straight. The win was Chicago’s fourth straight.

Case junior wide receiver Marshaun Minter (South Euclid, OH) led all receivers with eight catches for 85 yards. On the defensive end, sophomore defensive end Brian Calderone (Broadview Hts., OH) recorded 15 tackles and junior linebacker Nick Decesare ( Westlake, OH) added 11. The Spartans had 10 penalties (95 yards) called against them in the game and the Maroons four (35).
