CARNEGIE MELLON 23, CASE 20...
PITTSBURGH, PA (October 29, 2005) - The Case Western Reserve University football team dropped their fifth straight and fell to 0-2 in the University Athletic Association with a 23-20 loss at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh this afternoon. Case falls to 3-5 on the season while Carnegie Mellon improves to 4-3 and 1-2 in the UAA.
The Tartans had 408 yards in total offense compared to the Spartans’ 222 and had the ball for 37:24 minutes compared to Case’s 22:36.
The Spartans scored first in the battle for the Academic Bowl. Sophomore quarterback Angelo Mirando (Jefferson, OH) finished off a seven play (2:39 time) 60-yard drive with a 39-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Matt Skolnicki (Lorain, OH). Mirando finished the day 12 of 24 for 142-yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The snap on the point after was high, only giving the Case a 6-0 lead at the 10:38 mark in the first. Carnegie Mellon sophomore running back Travis Sivek (Traverse City, MI) then found the end zone on a one-yard run with 3:33 left in the first quarter to make it 7-6 Tartans. The score capped of an eight play 37-yard drive (3:05 time).
The Spartans started off the second quarter with another missed opportunity scoring wise. Sophomore kicker Brian Calderon (Broadview Hts., OH) missed wide left from 22-yards out at 14:18. The Tartans would not miss on their first three-point attempt of the day. Junior kicker Nathaniel Greenstein (Dobbs Ferry, NY) completed an 11 play (5:22) 70-yard Carnegie Mellon drive with a 27-yard field goal to improve their lead to 10-6 with 8:56 left in the half. The Case defense then put some points on the board. Spartan sophomore defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) intercepted Tartan freshman quarterback Doug Facemyer’s pass at the Carnegie Mellon 44-yard line and ran it back for the score. It was Tiemeier’s first collegiate touchdown. Sophomore kicker Brian Calderone connected on the point after, giving Case a 13-10 lead with just over two minutes (2:06) left in the second quarter. The Tartans ended the first half with a Greenstein 25-yard field goal that tied the game 13-13 with no time left on the clock.
Greenstein was back on the field at the 6:35 mark in the third to try one from 48-yards out, but missed short to the left. The Spartans took the lead with 8:42 left in the game via a Mirando 27-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Marshaun Minter (South Euclid, OH). The score finished off a five play (1:58) 41-yard drive as Calderone connected on the point after to make it 20-13. Carnegie Mellon then used up the clock and tied the game up with just over a minute (1:27) left. Sivek completed a 15 play (7:15) 75-yard drive with a four-yard run to make it 20-20. Greenstein connected on the extra point. Sivek finished the game with 31 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns. The Tartans would win the game with no time on the clock when Greenstein hit a career best 41-yard field goal after a four play (0:39) 25-yard drive.
Case senior Josh Dudek (Kenton, OH) led all Case receivers on the day with five catches for 55 yards. On the ground, freshman running back Dan Van Dyke compiled 50 yards on 11 carries. Defensively, junior linebacker Nick Decesare (Westlake, OH) and Tiemeier had 14 tackles each.
Next Saturday Case will travel to Chicago to take on UAA rival the University of Chicago at 12:00 p.m. (CST). The game can be heard live locally on WHK 1420-AM or worldwide via the internet. Chicago was also in Pennsylvania this past Saturday. The Maroons defeated Bethany College 42-3 in a non conference game.
