SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2005

CLEVELAND, OH (October 22, 2005)
- The Case Western Reserve football team had a tough afternoon as the Alfred University Saxons defeated the Spartans 14-0 at Case Field. Two rushing touchdowns from Alfred senior Brenton Brady (Rochester, NY) was all the Saxons needed as they sent Case to their fourth consecutive defeat. The shorthanded Spartans, now 3-4 on the year (0-1 UAA), were held to just 69 total yards on offense. The Saxons meanwhile compiled 317 yards in improving to 6-1 (3-0 Empire 8) this season.

The two teams played to scoreless first quarter, with Case looking impressive early on. On Senior Day, the Spartans' Jon Glicoes (Fairfax, VA) pounced on a Saxon fumble at the Case 45 yard line. Case then drove the ball down to the Alfred eight, before Spartan quarterback Alex Harvey (Dunnellon, FL) was sacked and turned the ball over on the 20 yard line. On the following possession, the Saxons went on a 15-play, 80-yard drive capped by a Brady 14-yard touchdown scamper to go on top 6-0. A Chris Reynolds (Pittsford, NY) extra point made the score 7-0 early in the second quarter.

The two teams traded possessions for most of the second quarter and it appeared Alfred might take a slim seven point advantage into the locker room at halftime. With just 2:07 to play in the half, Case ran into trouble on a fourth down punt attempt deep in their own end of the field. Case punter Brian Calderone (Broadview Hts., OH) mishandled the snap and was tackled at the Spartan three yard line. The Saxons then scored on the very next play as Brady plowed into the end zone from three yards out. The score at halftime was a 14-0 Alfred lead.

The second half brought more of the same as Alfred used a powerful running game and timely passing to control the ball. Case's best scoring opportunity came with just under eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. On fourth down, the Saxons' punter Josh Rammacher (Angola, NY) fumbled as he attempted a punt. Spartan defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) picked up the ball and returned it down to the Alfred 22 yard line. In the game, Tiemeier recorded 10 tackles (six solos) and also had an interception, his team-leading third on the year.

On the ensuing Spartan possession, Alfred was penalized for pass interference on a fourth down and nine play. An offsides call against the Saxons then gave Case a golden opportunity with first down and goal from the one yard line. The Saxon defense stiffened up and stopped running back Dan Van Dyke (Sandy Lake, PA) for a six-yard loss. Case ended their best scoring opportunity by turning the ball over on downs at the Alfred seven yard line.

Van Dyke, a freshman, led Case with 19 rushes for 44 yards on the day. Spartan senior quarterback Alex Harvey finished the day with 10 completions on 24 attempts for 75 yards. Defensively, Case's Brian Calderone recorded a game-high 14 tackles, including two and a half tackles for a loss of six yards.

Meanwhile, the Saxon offense grinded out 131 yards rushing on 50 carries. Sophomore Elmer Newsome (Cadosia, NY) led Alfred with 24 rushes for 75 yards while quarterback Paul Keeley (Caledonia, NY) threw for 186 yards on 18 of 27 passing. Besides rushing for 44 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, the Saxons' Brenton Brady also had a team-high 10 tackles on defense.

Case will hit the road for their final three games of the year. Next Saturday the Spartans will head to Pittsburgh , PA to take on UAA rival Carnegie Mellon University in a 2:00 p.m. game. The winner will claim the Academic Bowl trophy, which Case currently holds after last season's 24-14 victory over the Tartans.
