CLEVELAND, OH (October 15, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University had only 152 yards of total offense compared to 422 for Washington University (MO) as the Spartans fell to the visiting Bears 28-7 today in a University Athletic Association game at Case Field. The Spartans even their record at 3-3 on the year and go 0-1 in the UAA while Washington improves to 3-4 and 1-1 in the Association.
The Spartans' struggles began in the first half, compiling only 114 yards compared to Washington 's 215. Bear junior quarterback Nick Henry (Santa Monica, CA) threw two touchdowns passes in the first half. Henry tossed a 36-yard pass to sophomore tight end Jeff Howenstein (Belleville, IL) at the 1:31 mark in the first quarter and a 50 yarder to senior receiver Brad Duesing (Cincinnati, OH) in the second quarter at 14:45. Henry finished the game 15 of 31 for 254 yards (two interceptions), while Duesing made seven catches for 149 yards.
The Spartan's only score in the game came via a seven yard pass from Mirando to senior receiver Matt Skolnicki (Lorain, OH) at 10:14. Skolnicki finished the game with six catches for 50 yards. Mirando completed the game 14 of 27 for 109 yards, but threw three interceptions in the first half. Washington could have taken a 21-7 lead just before halftime, but an illegal pass call negated a Bears touchdown. The Bears then fumbled a field goal attempt and the score remained 14-7 at halftime.
Washington added to their 14-7 advantage in the second half by scoring two rushing touchdowns. Junior running back DaRonne Jenkins (Marietta, GA) scampered for a 72-yard touchdown at 7:28 in the third to make it 21-7. Later in the fourth quarter, senior running back Heath Hunter (Sikeston, MO) topped off a 10 play 57-yard drive at 8:26 with a one yard touchdown run. Jenkins finished the game with 12 carries for 111 yards and Heath with 11 carries for 24 yards.
Sophomore defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) led the Case defense with 10 total tackles. Brian Calderone (Brecksville, OH) was impressive in the Spartan punting game as he had eight punts for an average of 44.5, including a long of 58 yards. The leading rusher for Case was James Rosenbury (Draper, UT) with 37 yards on 16 carries. The Bears hounded Spartan quarterbacks all afternoon as they racked up seven total sacks. Jared Weis (Nolensville, TN) and Drew Wethington (Dexter, MO) recorded three and two sacks respectively for Washington.
Case will host Alfred University (NY) at Case Field at 1:00 p.m. in their last home game of the season. The Spartans will play their last three game of the season on the road.
