SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2005


CLEVELAND, OH (September 24, 2005)
- The Case Western Reserve University football team was outscored 28 to 8 in the second half of play this afternoon as they lost their first game of the season 38-21 to the College of Wooster at Case Field. Case, whom only had the ball for 21:48 compared to Wooster’s 38:12 today, falls to 3-1 on the year. The Scots improve to 3-0.

Wooster scored the only points in the first quarter when junior quarterback Jeff Schafer (Bethesda, OH) threw a 28 yard touchdown pass to senior running back Sean Anderson (Lowell, IN) at 9:56 to take a 7-0 lead. Schafer finished the day 19 of 32 for 213 yards and two touchdowns.

In the second quarter, Case senior quarterback Alex Harvey (Dunnellon, FL) threw for one touchdown and ran for another. Harvey found sophomore tight end Ben McDowell ( Dublin, OH) from five yards out at the 13:18 mark, but junior kicker Joe Brenner (Lititz, PA) missed the point after. The Spartans then took a 13-7 lead at 7:40 when Harvey ran one in from the one and Brenner connected on the point after. Wooster wasn’t finished for the half as sophomore running back Amil Tinsley (Detroit, MI) ran on in from 8 yards out at 4:31 to put the Scots up 14-13 at the half.

Wooster dominated the last 30 minutes of the game. In the third quarter (9:47), sophomore kicker Andy Milligan (Orrville, OH) connected from 38 yards out to put his team up 17-13. Then Schafer threw a 23 touchdown pass to junior tight end Greg Peltz (Amherst, OH) with under a minute to play (00:18) to increase the Scots lead to 24-13.

In the third, Schafer ran one in from six yards out (11:23) to make it 31-13. The Spartans found the end zone for the last time at the 6:38 mark in the fourth on a four yard touchdown pass from Harvey to senior wide receiver Matt Skolnicki (Lorain, OH). The Scots ended the game with one last touchdown via an interception to make the final 38-21.

Cas had three defensive players in double digits in tackles. Sophomore John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) had 14, sophomore linebacker Mike Tuertscher (Cincinnati, OH) had 13 and sophomore linebacker Dawud Wilson (Cleveland, OH) 12.

The Spartans will host Defiance College this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. for the first night game at Case Field. Fireworks will follow immediately following the game.
