SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2005


CLEVELAND, OH (September 10, 2005)
- The Case Western Reserve University football team opened-up their brand new football complex this afternoon with a 20-6 win over Denison University . Case junior running back James Rosenbury (Draper, UT) ran all over Case Field, finishing the game with 35 carries and 185 yards. The Spartans improved to 2-0 on the year and travel to Kenyon College next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game. Denison falls to 1-1 in the early going this season.

The first touchdown on the new field came at the 10:49 mark when Case sophomore quarterback Angelo Mirando (Jefferson, OH) ran one in from the Denison five yard line. Mirando finished the day with 11 rushes and 51 yards on the ground and 28 attempts and 16 completions in the air for 199 yards. Mirando's lone touchdown pass came at the 12:13 mark in the second when he found junior receiver Marshaun Minter (South Euclid, OH) from 12 yards out to put Case up 14-0. Minter caught six passes for 60 yards in the Spartans home opener. Case scored once more before the half when junior kicker Joe Brenner (Lititz, PA) hit a 25 yarder with 1:07 left on the clock to give Case a 17-0 advantage at the half.

Brenner connected again at the beginning of the third (10:41) from 19 yards out. That would be the last time the Spartans would score. Brenner finished the day two-for-four in field goals and two-for-two in points after. The Case defense was relentless holding the Big Red scoreless for the first 52 minutes of the game (52:48). Denison finally put points on the board at the 7:12 mark in the fourth quarter when senior running back Joey Thees (Holland, OH) ran one in from 43 yards out. The point after was blocked. Thees finished the day with six carries for 62 yards.

Spartan junior linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) led the defensive attack with 12 tackles (3 solo, 9 assist). Defensive back Santo Maimone (Eastlake, OH) added 7 tackles (4 solo, 3 assist). Case freshman receiver Scott Moyer (Zanesville, OH) help out on the offensive side of the ball with a career high six catches for 75 yards.
