CASE 30, OBERLIN 27 ...
OBERLIN, OH (September 3, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore quarterback Angelo Mirando (Jefferson, OH), a local Jefferson Area High School product, made the most of his first collegiate start this afternoon. Mirando threw for two touchdowns and ran for another two as the Spartans defeated Oberlin College 30-27 in a non-conference road game. Mirando, who transferred to Case from Valparaiso University (Division I-AA), finished the game 8-13 for 121 yards and with 18 carries for 64 yards.
Spartan junior linebacker Nick Decesare (Westlake, OH) led the defense with 8 solo tackles and 6 assists (11.0 total). Sophomore defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) was right behind him with six solo and two assists (7.0).
In the first half, Oberlin sophomore receiver Chris Schubert (Oberlin, OH) found the end zone first, catching a 10 yard pass from Yeomen sophomore quarterback Andy Stein (Sunbury, OH) at the 9:42 mark in the first. Case scored the next three, two coming from the arm of sophomore quarterback Angelo Mirando (Jefferson, OH). Mirando found junior receiver Marshaun Minter (South Euclid, OH) on a five yard pass with 2:36 left in the first and then connected with senior receiver Matt Skolnicki (Lorain, OH) from two yards out at the 9:43 mark in the second quarter. In between those two scores Mirando ran one in from 27 yards out to end the first quarter. Case junior kicker Joe Brenner (Lititz, PA) went two-for-three in the first half on extra points as the Spartans led 20-7 at the half.
Case made it four straight scores at the 12:58 mark in the third when Mirando ran one in from 15 yards out. Oberlin then scored for the first time since the first quarter via a 6 yard pass with a 1:48 left in the third quarter when Stein connected with sophomore receiver Cassius Harris (Chicago, IL). Case's Brenner, who went one-for-one in extra points in the second half, hit a field goal from 42 yards out to begin the fourth (13:13). That was the last time his team would put points on the scoreboard. The Yeomen brought it within three, scoring at the 7:59 mark when freshman running back R.V. Carroll (Perry, OH) ran one in from the one and then at 2:48 when Stein connected with Harris again, this time a 60 yard touchdown pass. Oberlin did get the ball back with 1:07 left in the game, but the Spartan defense stopped them.
Next for Case is the grand opening of their brand new football facility when they host Denison University this Saturday (Sept. 10) at 1:00 p.m. The game can also be heard live on 850 AM WKNR.
