CASE 24, CARNEGIE MELLON 14 ...
CLEVELAND , OH (October 30, 2004) - The Case Spartans snapped a three-game slide and claimed the Academic Bowl trophy with a 24-14 victory over visiting Carnegie Mellon University . The Spartans improved to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the University Athletic Association behind a tremendous overall team effort.
Sophomore running back James Rosenbury (Draper, UT) led with the way with an outstanding rushing effort of 31 carries for 134 yards. Through the air, freshman quarterback Jason Bodart (Fostoria, OH) came off the bench to complete 10 of 16 passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns. Bodart also rushed the ball 13 times for 32 yards.
Case made a statement on their first possession as they drove the ball 67 yards in 14 plays to set up a Joseph Brenner (Lititz, PA) 29-yard field goal. The drive was important for Case as they had disappointing offensive play a week ago in a loss to Alfred University .
The Spartan lead didn't last long however as the Carnegie Mellon Tartans scored two touchdowns over their next three possessions to take a 14-3 lead. It looked like the Tartans would take a 14-3 lead into the locker room at halftime when Case failed on a fourth and one from the Carnegie Mellon 48 yard line. On the very next play, freshman defensive back Scott Madden (North Olmsted, OH) made his third interception in his last three games to give Case the ball back just before halftime.
With 54 yards to go and only 42 seconds left in the second quarter, Jason Bodart needed only one play as he hooked up deep with wide receiver Matt Skolnicki (Lorain, OH) for a 54-yard touchdown. A Brenner extra point made the score just 14-10 as the two teams headed to the locker room.
Case controlled every aspect of the second half as Jason Bodart added two more touchdowns to complete a run of 21 unanswered points for the Spartans. In the third quarter, the Spartans capped off a 12 play, 73 yard drive with a four-yard touchdown pass from Bodart to David Kallevig (Brecksville, OH). The senior wide receiver finished with eight catches for 72 yards in another solid performance for Kallevig.
The Spartans finished out the scoring when Bodart went back to Skolnicki, this time from 20 yards out. The two touchdowns were the first of Skolnicki's collegiate career as he completed the day with two catches for 74 yards. Overall, the Spartan offense amassed 329 yards and most importantly, committed only one turnover.
Case again played inspired football on the defensive side of the ball. Linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) played a spectacular game as he recorded a team high eight tackles including six solos. Freshman defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) made huge play in the fourth quarter when he sacked the Tartan quarterback, forcing the ball loose and Joe McCrackin (Tallmadge, OH) came up with the fumble for Case.
The Spartans will look to finish with a .500 record or better for the fourth year in a row when they host the University of Chicago Saturday, November 6 at Brush High School's Korb Field in a 12:30 start.
