SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2004

CLEVELAND , OH (October 23, 2004) - It was a tough day for the Case Spartans as they were beat up by Alfred University in Alfred , NY 35-3. The loss drops Case to 3-5 on the year with just two home games remaining on the Spartans' schedule.

The Alfred University Saxons improved to 6-1 by controlling the ball and capitalizing on six Case turnovers. The Saxons shut down the Case offense with the Spartans amassing just 50 total yards.

Alfred University opened up the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ron Duliba to Craig Zarzycki in the first quarter. Duliba really hurt the Spartans as he completed 16 of 29 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns.

Case was only down 7-0 when Joseph Brenner (Lititz, PA) nailed a 39-yard field goal early in the second quarter. The field goal was Brenner's fifth make in eight tries.

Alfred broke the game open when they scored three consecutive touchdowns late in the second quarter. Duliba hooked up with TyQuan Horton from 20 yards out with just 4:11 to play before halftime. Two Spartan fumbles gave the Saxons great field position for the final two scores of the first half. Brenton Brady capped of a five play 28-yard drive with a two yard touchdown run. Duliba then went back to Horton, this time a 21-yard touchdown pass with just 20 seconds left before the intermission.

The only scoring of the second half was Duliba's fourth touchdown pass of the game, a 70-yard bomb to Lee Bates. Both teams played a scoreless fourth quarter with a lot of young players getting an opportunity on the field.

The Case offense wasn't able to mount much of an attack against the Saxon defense. The Spartan rushing game was held to a net rushing total of -12 yards on 27 carries. Dan Banks (Cleveland, OH) was the leading Case rusher with just 12 yards gained on eight carries. Freshman quarterback Robert Gavlak (Brunswick, OH) also had a tough day, being sacked four times and completing on seven of 21 passes for 56 yards with two interceptions. Fellow freshman Jason Bodart (Fostoria, OH) saw his first playing time at the quarterback position in relief of Gavlak.

There were some positives for Case on the defensive side of the ball as they were able to collect six sacks. Tom Brew (Mentor, OH), who had three sacks last week, picked up two more today for 8.5 total tackles, of which 4.5 were for a loss. Mike Collins (Cleveland, OH) also recorded two sacks with four total tackles. The Spartans leading tackler, linebacker Adam Heath (Piqua, OH), made 8.5 more tackles today, including one sack. Also, freshman defensive back Scott Madden (North Olmsted, OH) got his second interception in as many games.

The Spartans will be back in action next Saturday, October 30 th when Carnegie Mellon comes to town for a 12:30 p.m. UAA contest. The game will be played at Brush High SchooL's Korb Field located in Lyndhurst, OH .
