CLEVELAND , OH (October 16, 2004) - Case opened up University Athletic Association (UAA) play today with a 28-14 loss to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri . The defeat moves the Spartans to 3-4 on the year and now 0-1 in the UAA.
It was all Washington in the first quarter as they jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead. The Bears scored on each of their first three possessions with a five-yard touchdown run, a 33-yard touchdown pass, and a one-yard rushing touchdown. The third Bear touchdown came off a Joe DiGeronimo (Independence, OH) fumble at Case's own 20-yard line.
Case got onto the scoreboard in the second quarter when running back James Rosenbury (Draper, UT) plunged into the end zone from a yard out. Rosenbury, Case's leading rusher, finished the day with 53 yards rushing on 18 carries. At halftime the Spartans were still in reach with Washington leading 21-7.
The Bears continued the scoring in the second half when David Kallevig (Brecksville, OH) mishandled at punt return and Washington recovered it at the Case 34 yard line. A 15-yard passing touchdown put Case down 28-14 early in the second half.
The Spartans were able to add another touchdown late in the fourth quarter when Case capitalized on a Mike Collins (Cleveland, OH) interception. Collins, a junior, intercepted the ball at the Case 49 yard line and returned it 38 yards to the Washington 13. A 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Robert Gavlak (Brunswick, OH) to wide received Scott Greer (Pepper Pike, OH) made the final score 28-14.
The Case defense bottled up the Bears running game all day as Washington rushed for just 69 yards on 40 carries. However, Washington was effective through air passing for 285 yards, despite three interceptions. Recording the interceptions for Case were junior Santo Maimone (Eastlake, OH), freshman Scott Madden (North Olmsted, OH), and Mike Collins. Maimone's interception was his team leading fourth of the year.
Sophomore linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) was impressive on defense as he recorded three sacks for Case. David Kallevig again led the Spartans in receiving as he made nine catches for 67 yards. Quarterback Robert Gavlak was 18 of 34 passing for 130 yards including the one touchdown.
The Spartans will look to break a two game losing streak when they travel to Alfred, NY to take on Alfred University in a 1:00 p.m. game next Saturday, October 23rd.
