MARYVILLE 16 , CASE 0...
CLEVELAND , OH (October 9, 2004) - It was a bitter homecoming for the Case Western Reserve Spartans as they lost to the Maryville College Fighting Scots 16-0 today at Brush High School's Korb Field in South Euclid, Ohio. It was the first time in 43 games that the Spartans, now 3-3, were unable to put points on the board.
The Fighting Scots defense was in control of the Case offense all day long as they forced four Spartan turnovers compared to zero for Maryville . The two teams played to a scoreless first quarter. Case's first possession of the second quarter ended in disaster when quarterback Alex Harvey (Dunnellon , FL) threw an interception to Maryville's Kyle Harris. Harris took the ball at the Case 33 yard line and returned it all the way for a Fighting Scots touchdown. A missed extra point made the score 6-0.
The Spartan's very next possession looked to be promising as Case drove the ball down to the Maryville 16 yard line. On second down and eight, Alex Harvey was again intercepted by Kyle Harris, this time at the Maryville 10 yard line. Harris returned the ball 53 yards into Case territory.
The Spartan defense played solid all day, most notably on a goal line stand as they stopped Maryville on fourth down with just inches to go to the end zone. Adam Heath (Piqua, OH) and Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) led the way on defense for the Spartans as they finished with 11.5 and 10 tackles respectively. Mike Kelley (Boardman, OH) and Ron Cordaro (Mentor, OH) each finished with a sack of the Fighting Scots quarterback Erik Hardison. The first half ended with Case down just 6-0 and plenty of time to make a comeback.
The second half didn't change much for Case as Joseph Brenner (Lititz, PA) missed a 44-yard field goal on the Spartans first possession of the third quarter. Maryville tacked on a 36-yard field goal to make it a 9-0 lead with plenty of time left for the Spartans as the fourth quarter began.
The hope faded when Case's freshman quarterback Robert Gavlak (Brunswick, OH), who replaced the injured Alex Harvey, threw an interception to Maryville's Colby Townsend. Townsend rumbled down the field 56 yards for another Fighting Scots defensive touchdown. The touchdown deflated the Spartans as Maryville added on the extra point to take a 16-0 lead.
The Spartans' fate was decided when Gavlak was sacked and fumbled the ball away with just 2:56 left in the game.
The Fighting Scots bottled up the Case running game as James Rosenbury (Draper, UT) mustered just 49 yards on 19 carries. Wide out David Kallevig (Brecksville, OH) had another solid performance catching nine passes for 94 yards on the day. Harvey finished 8-13 for 95 yards with the two costly interceptions. Gavlak completed the day 7 of 11 for 41 passing yards in his first collegiate appearance.
For the fourth straight game, an opposing running back rushed for over 100 yards as Maryville 's Hubert Payne ran for 112 yards on 26 carries. The Fighting Scots didn't have much of a passing game, completing just three of seven passes for 33 yards, but they didn't need to as the Case turnovers decided the game.
The Spartans will open up UAA play next week when they travel to St. Louis to take on Washington University in a 12:00 p.m. (CST) game.
