CASE 12, DEFIANCE 10...
CLEVELAND, OH (October 2, 2004) - Case Western Reserve’s passing game outplayed Defiance College’s ground attack as the Spartans prevailed over the Yellow Jackets 12-10 this afternoon. The aerial assault for Case, now with a 3-2 record, was led by junior quarterback Alex Harvey (Dunellon, FL). Harvey was 17 of 29 passing for 239 yards and two touchdowns, including a 65-yard scoring pass to senior wide out David Kallevig (Brecksville, OH). Kallevig, who holds the majority of Case’s receiving records, finished the day with seven catches for 160 yards and the one touchdown.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half with both Case and Defiance missing field goal chances in the first quarter. Joseph Brenner (Lititz, PA) missed his first field goal of the season for the Spartans when his attempt from 41 yards out was off course.
Defiance got the ball to start the second half and was able to put the first points on the board when they connected on a 39-yard field goal attempt. The Spartans answered right back on their next possession when Harvey hooked up with Kallevig for the 65-yard score. A missed extra point by Brenner made the score 6-3 in favor of Case.
On the ensuing possession, the Yellow Jackets were driving until Santo Maimone (Eastlake, OH) intercepted a Defiance College pass in the end zone. The Spartans then embarked on a 12 play 80 yard drive capped of by Harvey’s second touchdown pass of the day. This time it was a seven yard toss to running back Joe DiGeronimo (Independence, OH). Again the Spartans failed on the extra point try and led only 12-3 with 5:21 left to play in the third quarter. DiGeronimo, who was filling in for injured running back James Rosenbury (Draper, UT), rushed the ball 20 times for 77 yards and had two catches for nine yards.
The scoring continued as Defiance scored on a two yard touchdown run on their very next possession to cut Case’s lead to only 12-10. That’s when the Spartan defense stepped up and shut the door on the Yellow Jackets and running back Darin Lomason. Lomason carried the ball 34 times for 128 yards for the Yellow Jackets.
With 3:53 to play in the game, Defiance got the ball on their own 18 yard line, needing only a field goal to win. Defiance got a first down, but then Paul Hannen (Seville, OH) stopped Lomason six yards deep in the back field. A substitution infraction backed the Yellow Jackets up five more yards before Chris Katitus (Amherst, OH) sacked the Defiance quarterback for a 13 yard loss to set up an impossible third and 34. The Yellow Jackets got only five yards on the next play and were forced to punt to Case who ran out the clock to seal the victory.
Leading the way on defense for the Spartans was Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) with 10 tackles and Adam Heath (Piqua, OH) with 8.5 on the afternoon. Jon Glicoes (Fairfax, VA) and Katitus each recorded a sack for Case and Maimone’s interception was the only takeaway by either squad.
Homecoming will be next Saturday when Case will host Maryville College for a 1:00 p.m. game at Brush High School’s Korb Field. Last season the Spartans beat Maryville 27-17 in Maryville, Tennessee.
