WOOSTER 49, CASE 7 ...
CLEVELAND, OH (September 25, 2004) - It was a tough day in Wooster, Ohio for the Case Spartans as they fell to the undefeated College of Wooster Scots 49-7 this afternoon.
Case, now 2-2 on the season, came into the game looking to avenge last year’s 62-33 drubbing and break a seven game winless streak against Wooster. But Tony Sutton and the rest of the Scots were just too dominant today as Sutton, who scorched the Spartans for 346 rushing yards a season ago, finished with 155 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.
Sutton opened up the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run on Wooster’s first possession of the game. Three more Wooster touchdowns in the second quarter and the Spartans were down 28-0 at halftime. The scoring didn’t stop there as the Scots came out and scored two second half touchdowns before the Spartans finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with 2-yard touchdown run by Joe DiGeronimo (Independence, OH). It was too little too late for the Spartans however, as Wooster tacked on one more touchdown to make the final scored 49-7.
Case mustered just nine first downs today which kept sophomore punter Joseph Brenner’s (Lititz, PA) leg busy. The Case punter tied the five year old school record for punts in a game with 12 overall for a total of 469 yards.
Case junior quarterback Alex Harvey (Dunnellon, FL) finished the day 11 of 19 for 133 yards through the air and was sacked three times for a loss of 14 yards. The Scot defense was tough as they shut down a Spartan offense that was explosive a week ago against Kenyon. Case rushed the ball 45 times for only 116 yards. James Rosenbury (Draper, UT) was the leading rusher for the Spartans as he ran 12 times for 25 yards. The Spartans leading wide receiver David Kallevig (Brecksville, OH) was held to just four catches for 38 yards. Scott Greer (Pepper Pike, OH) led Case with 68 receiving yards on his four receptions.
On the defensive side of the ball, Adam Heath (Piqua, OH) finished with a team high 6.5 tackles for Case. The Spartans did however win the turnover battle as sophomore linebacker Adam Bonsiewich (Coral Springs, FL) pounced on a fumble and freshman defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) made his first collegiate interception.
The Spartans will be on the road again next Saturday when they travel to Defiance, Ohio to take on Defiance College in a 1:00 p.m. match up.
