CASE 46, KENYON 24 ...
CLEVELAND , OH (September 18, 2004) - It was a record setting day for Case senior wide receiver David Kallevig as the Spartans improved to 2-1 by defeating the Kenyon Lords 46-24 today at Korb Field in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Kallevig set the Case all-time records in career receptions (161) and receiving yards (2,420) and he earned sole possession of the all-time receiving touchdowns mark (26) as he hauled in three more today. He finished the day with eight catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns and also ran the ball twice for 21 yards. The one two punch of Kallevig and running back James Rosenbury was too much for the Lords as the pair combined for all seven of Spartan touchdowns.
Case came out firing right away, scoring on their first three possessions and jumped out to a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Spartans got into the end zone first on a James Rosenbury two yard touchdown run which capped off a 10 play, 63 yard drive. David Kallevig scored on Case's next possession when he caught a 31-yard pass from quarterback Alex Harvey. A Kenyon fumble at their own 30-yard line set up the Spartans third touchdown of the half. It was Rosenbury again from two yards out as he notched his second touchdown of the day. Joseph Brenner made two of three extra point attempts and it looked like the Spartans would run away with the game with a 20-0. However Kenyon would not go away quietly and got on the scoreboard with a Ben Woodcock 31-yard field goal. Case was driving for their fourth touchdown of the first half, but Alex Harvey fumbled and the Lords recovered at their own 14-yard line. Two possessions later Kenyon scored a touchdown with just 12 seconds to go in the first half to make the score the 20-10.
The second half started right where the first half left off with the Kenyon Lords driving down the field to score a touchdown. It was running back Alby Coombs who got into the end zone for the Lords and with a Ben Woodcock extra point Case found themselves with a slim 20-17 lead. Coombs was the workhorse for Kenyon as he carried the ball 32 times for 189 yards.
That was as close as the Lords would get however as three straight Spartan touchdowns put the game out of reach. Kallevig got his second score of the day on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Harvey . Then came the Rosenbury show as he scored two touchdowns in less than 15 seconds. The first was from one yard out capping off an impressive nine play, 81-yard drive. On the ensuing kickoff, kicker Joseph Brenner sent the ball high and short in the air and Santo Maimone recovered the ball for the Spartans at the Kenyon 42-yard line. The very next play Rosenbury dashed 42 yards down the field and into the end zone. On the day, Rosenbury piled up 211 yards on 38 carries to go along with his four touchdowns.
Kenyon tried to come back with a Carlin Shoemaker touchdown catch with 7:38 to go in the game. But it was Kallevig who shut the door for good on the Lords when he made a great juggling touchdown catch on a 40-yard pass from Harvey . Harvey also played a stellar game finishing 11 of 15 for 235 yards and three touchdowns.
Both teams had balanced offensive attacks with Case racking up 275 yards rushing and 235 through the air, as the Lords had 235 on the ground and 251 yards passing. Case lost the turnover battle however with two fumbles to Kenyon's one.
Mike Collins and Adam Bonsiewich led the way for the Spartans on defense with 8.5 and eight total tackles respectively. Bonsiewich also finished with two and half sacks while Collins had a sack to go along with a fumble recovery.
Next Saturday (September 25) the Spartans travel to Wooster, Ohio to take on the College of Wooster Fighting Scots for a 1:00 pm game. Case will be looking for payback as last year the Scots Tony Sutton rushed for 346 yards and six touchdowns in a 62-33 Wooster victory.
