DENISON 36, CASE 21...
CLEVELAND , OH (September 11, 2004) - The visiting Case Spartans were defeated by the Denison Big Red 36-21 in Granville, Ohio this afternoon. Case, now 1-1 on the young season, tried to make a comeback from a 29-0 deficit at halftime only to fall short in the end.
Denison used a powerful rushing attack combined with an efficient passing game to build an early 29-0 lead in the first half. The Denison first half scoring consisted of two rushing touchdowns from Phil Bouwhuis, a three-yard touchdown run by Joey Thees, and a 33-yard touchdown pass from Larry Cappetto to Frank Roe. The Spartans headed to locker room at halftime with less than 80 yards of total offense.
In the second half, Case came out onto the field on a mission to get back into the game. The Spartans started the half by forcing Denison to a three and out on the Big Red's first series. Alex Harvey then completed a 41-yard pass to David Kallevig which set up a two-yard James Rosenbury touchdown on the very next play. The Case defense, led by Mike Collins with 10 tackles, again forced Denison to another three and out. On the ensuing possession, it was a one-yard touchdown run by Harvey that capped off a 10-play, 54 yard drive for Case. David Kallevig continued the rally as he hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Harvey near the end of the third quarter. Harvey hooked up with Kallevig for the two-point conversion and the scoreboard read Denison 29, Case 21, to begin the fourth quarter.
That was as close as Case would get however, as the Big Red added on another Bouwhuis touchdown run, this time from five yards out. The Spartan comeback must have taken a toll as Case was unable to muster up much offense in the fourth quarter.
Denison controlled the ground game by out-rushing the Spartans 241 yards to 80 yards. Leading the way for Case in rushing was James Rosenbury with 14 carries for 50 yards. Alex Harvey finished the game with 30 yards on the ground to go along with 14 of 30 for 160 yards passing. David Kallevig led all receivers by catching eight passes for 117 yards. The only turnover in the game was a Harvey interception which setup the Big Red's fourth touchdown of the first half.
The Spartans look to get back on the winning track next Saturday when they return to Cleveland to take on the Kenyon College Lords in a 1:00 p.m. game at Brush High School.
