MCDOWELL WORKS MAJIC FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE WEEK…
CLEVELAND, OH - Senior running back Brandon McDowell (Cleveland, OH) and the Case Western Reserve University Spartans (2-0, 0-0 UAA) picked off right where they left off last week. McDowell, who turned in a four touchdown performance a week ago, picked up a school-record five touchdowns in today's 51-20 victory over Denison University (0-2, 0-0 NCAC) at Finnigan Field. McDowell also broke the school record for most points scored in a game with 30. Freshmen defensive back Dan Banks (Cleveland, OH) also set a school record with a 103 yard interception returned for a touchdown with less than a minute left in the game.
The Spartans led at the half 28-7. McDowell scored three times in the first half including a 56 yard reception on a pass from Senior quarterback Eli Grant (Brooklyn, NY). Case outscored the Big Red 23-13 in the second half.
McDowell totaled 215 yards on 24 carries for an average of nine yards per carry. The Spartans totaled 255 yards on the ground. As usual, Grant led the air attack. Grant completed 14 of 26 passes for 265 yards and threw two touchdown passes. David Kallevig (Brecksville, OH) led all receivers in the game with six receptions for 97 yards. For Denison, Phil Bouwhuis (Grand Rapids, MI) had 26 carries on 99 yards and one touchdown to lead the Big Red. John Stoll (Grand Rapids, MI) completed 7 of 22 passes for 110 yards, threw two touchdowns as well as two interceptions.
Defensively sophomore linebacker Mike Collins (Cleveland, OH) led the way for the Spartans. Collins had nine and a half tackles including one for a loss. Senior defensive end Pat Conochan (Concord, OH) had a sack while sophomore defensive back Santon Maimone (Eastlake, OH) recovered a fumble for Case. The Spartan defense picked off three passes as well, highlighted by the interception returned 103 yards for a touchdown by Banks. Freshmen defensive back Joseph Brenner (Lititz, PA) and senior defensive back Michael DePaulo (Sagamore Hills, OH) also had interceptions for Case. DePaulo also caused a fumble. Senior defensive back Ryan Modica (Zanesville, OH) led Denison with eight tackles.
The Spartans travel to Oberlin next week for its third straight non-conference game, kick off is at 1:00 p.m.
