CASE FALLS IN UAA OPENER...
PITTSBURGH, PA - Case Western Reserve University senior running back Brandon McDowell (Cleveland, OH) went into today’s University Athletic Association opener against Carnegie Mellon University leading the nation in all-purpose yards (266.8 ypg.) and fifth in rushing (168.2 ypg.). Carnegie Mellon held him to just 61 total yards as they defeated Case 44-16. The Spartans drop to 4-2 and 0-1 in the UAA, the Tartans improve to 4-2, 1-0 in the Association.
Carnegie Mellon, who led 24-6 at the half, controlled the game on the ground. The Tartans ran the ball 79 times for 387 yards compared to the Spartans 23 rushes for 72 yards, 61 coming from McDowell. Carnegie Mellon also came through in the clutch, converting on 12 of 17 third-downs compared to Case’s 4 of 10.
Spartan senior quarterback Eli Grant (Brooklyn, NY) completed 23 of 34 passes on the day for 277 yards and two touchdowns (one interception). Case’s other score came on a 24-yard field goal from freshman Joseph Brenner (Litiz, PA). Sophomore wide receiver Jason Cellura (Euclid, OH) led all receivers in the game with nine catches for 96 yards and one touchdown. Senior defensive back Mike DePaulo (Sagamore Hills, OH) led the defense with 12.5 (10 solo, 5 assist) tackles.
Carnegie Mellon had two running backs doing the dirty work. Junior Brad Stanley (Berwyn, PA), who had 39 carries for 169 yards and three touchdowns and senior Ricardo Clarke (Sunrise, FL), who had 26 rushes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Tartan junior quarterback Jarrod Highberger (Blairsville, PA) only had to pass the ball nine times (5-9, 50 yards).
Case host Washington University (MO) this Saturday (Oct. 25) at 12:00 p.m (Homecoming).
