SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2003

However, the story of the day was the running of Wooster's Tony Sutton (Akron, OH), who rushed the ball 34 times for 338 yards and scored six touchdowns.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead after a 44 yard pass from Eli Grant (Brooklyn, NY) to Cellura to make the score 6-0. After Santo Maimone (Eastlake, OH) forced a fumble that was recovered by Scott Carroll (North Olmstead, OH), the Spartans scored on a five yard pass from Grant to McDowell to make the score 13-0.

Wooster scored a touchdown on their next drive to make the score 13-7 in favor of Case to end the first quarter. Sutton scored his first touchdown of the day to even the score at 13-13. Case responded with a pass from wide receiver Marshaun Minter (South Euclid, OH) to Jason Cellura for 34 yards and a Spartan touchdown to give Case the lead 20-13. A 61 yard run by Sutton gave the Scots a touchdown and tied the game at 20-20. Brandon McDowell then scored on a screen pass from Eli Grant to give the Spartans a 27-20 advantage. Grant then scored on a quarterback sneak from one yard out to give the Spartans a halftime lead of 33-20.

Two Sutton touchdowns in the third quarter gave Wooster the lead 34-33. The Spartans then drove the ball down to the 19 yard line of Wooster in the fourth quarter, but an Eli Grant pass was intercepted and returned 85 yards for a touchdown to give Wooster a 41-33 lead. Three more Sutton touchdown runs made the final score 62-33.

For the game, Eli Grant was 26-50 for 324 yards and three touchdowns as well as three interceptions. He was also sacked three times. Defensively, Case was lead by Mike Collins (Cleveland, OH) and Santo Maimone each with seven and a half tackles.

The Spartans are off this Saturday and then travel to Maryville College in Tennessee on October 11th, kick-off is at 1:30 PM.
