Mike is a native of MN but left there over half a life-time ago. He is the father of four children: Katy 17, Matt 15, Alex 14, and Randy 11. He started teaching in January 1988 at a college with 1400 undergraduates and was the Lumsden-Valrance Lecturer at Michigan State University where there were 42,000 undergraduates. In 2006 he came to Case from ASM International where he was Director of Education and Business Development. His primary educational interest is in finding ways to help students better understand and enjoy science. Along those lines, he authored a comic book for middle schools kids and, in collaboration with three colleagues, developed a chemical demonstration program entirely set to music. In 2008 he received the Outstanding Student Organization Advisor award for his work with Education Theater, a student group that performs hands-on demonstrations for local school groups.
