GEORGE NEWMAN (BASEBALL), western reserve university - 1954, DENTAL SCHOOL - 1957
George Newman was a four-year letter winner as a pitcher with the Western Reserve University Red Cats from 1951 to 1954.
His proudest accomplishment with the team was being selected as an All-Mid American Conference player his junior and senior seasons, recording wins over then conference rivals Kent State, Bowling Green and Marshall. As a senior, Newman received the WRU baseball team’s MVP award. While attending dental school, Newman played semi-professional baseball in the Cleveland Plain Dealer Triple AAA League, recording a 20-2 record on the mound in 1956. Newman received offers to play with four major league baseball teams, including the Cleveland Indians, but instead chose to continue pursuing a career in dentistry. He graduated magna cum laude from the Western Reserve University dental school in 1957 and ranked second in his class of 60 students. He is a charter member of the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted with Cleveland professional sport icons Otto Graham and Bob Feller.
