nancy gray (coach, teacher, administrator), case western reserve university - 1968-2000
Nancy Gray will be remembered as a woman who broke new ground by advancing women’s sports at Case Western Reserve University while assuring the women of Mather College their place in history.
Gray was chosen to head up the first varsity women’s basketball team in 1971 following the federation of Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University in 1967. Gray posted a 73-71 record in 12 seasons as Case Western Reserve’s original women’s basketball coach and, until 2000, she held the record for most victories in women’s basketball. She also was the University’s first women’s soccer coach and primary women’s athletics administrator as designated by the NCAA. One of her proudest accomplishments is the fact that four of her former players are members of the Case Reserve Athletic Club Hall of Fame: Ann Harsh (1972), Billie Navojosky (1972), Beth Bickford (1981) and Peggy Musser (1983). Gray served Case Western Reserve for 32 years as an associate professor of physical education, tennis coach, soccer coach, associate athletic director and coordinator of physical education.
