PROFESSOR JOHN J. GRABOWSKI
Krieger-Mueller Associate Professor in Applied History
Director of Research, Western Reserve Historical Society

Spring 2007 HSTY 328/428 students at Blue Mosque in Istanbul
This course examines the development of museums and archives in the United States, the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. It focuses on the historical background of these agencies and on issues relating to their management, mission, and place in society at different periods of time. Particular attention is given to the factors affecting the operation of these agencies at present and in the recent past including matters such as privatization, competition with for-profit cultural/historical entities and professionalization. The course is open to students from Case and Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. The Bilkent students will participate via a live, interactive broadcast of the lecture given at Case. Both sets of students will work from the same syllabus and have access to the same literature, either in hard-copy or on a computer-based platform. Cooperative research between Turkish and American students is a prime component of the course. Provided grant funding is secured, a mutual "site visit" (Ankara to Cleveland, Cleveland to Ankara) will be offered at the end of the semester.
