The spring/summer issue of art/sci, the college’s alumni magazine, is arriving in mailboxes this month—but the full content is online now. Read about STEP, the innovative program that prepares scientists to become entrepreneurs, and join fellows from the Institute for the Science of Origins as they explain their research to an audience at a hipster bar. Research finds surprises—good or bad—cause people to reduce risk-taking
Heath Demaree, associate professor of psychology, is the lead author of a study that reveals that surprising events—even positive ones—cause humans to be less likely to take risks. The article, “Risk Dishabituation: In Repeated Gambling, Risk Is Reduced Following Low-Probability ‘Surprising’ Events (Win or Lose),” was published in the American Psychological Association journal Emotion. Faculty member selected for role reviewing climate change document
Jeremy Bendik-Keymer, the Beamer-Schneider Professor in Ethics and associate professor of philosophy, has been selected as an expert reviewer on Working Group III’s contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change‘s Fifth Assessment Report. Bendik-Keymer will join hundreds of other reviewers who will comb through the report on social, ethical and economic dimensions of climate change.

Historian writes about anniversary of Cleveland's "unbelievable decade"
John Grabowski, the Krieger-Mueller Associate Professor in Applied History, was interviewed about the city's 10-year boom that began 100 years ago, "when everything came together." The decade beginning in 1912 brought Cleveland some of its most precious institutions, including the West Side Market, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Clinic and more.
