Dr. Bernd teaches theater history, literature, and
theory for both majors and non-majors. Before coming
to Cleveland, she was an Assistant Professor at The
University of Oklahoma in Norman where she was
involved in the dramaturgy program. Her credits as
dramaturg include Louis Nowra's Cosi, Tom Stoppard's
The Real Thing, and the first university production of
Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses.
Her research focuses on how communities have preserved
particular identities through theatrical production.
She received a Kosciuszko Fellowship for study at
Warsaw University in Poland (Uniwersytet Warszawski)
where she studied Polish culture and researched how
theater has supported Polish identity since the
Renaissance. Her articles have been published in Text
and Presentation and Theater Journal and she has
presented a number of papers at national conferences
such as The Association for Theatre in Higher
Education (ATHE), The Comparative Drama Conference,
and The National Communication Association (NCA).
