Dual Field AYA Physical Science Teacher Licensure
(Chemistry and Physics)

Overview of Program

Degrees in these programs are awarded by Case Western Reserve University and licensure is obtained through John Carroll University.

For Students Majoring Either in Chemistry or in Physics:

The Adolescent to Young Adult (AYA) teacher licensure program in Physical Science (Dual-Field) enables students majoring either in the B.A. program in Chemistry or B.A. program in Physics to become qualified to teach both chemistry and physics at the high school level. The program has been designed in accordance with the guidelines of the National Science Teachers Association, the Ohio Performance-based Teacher Licensure Standards, and implications for teacher qualification of the Ohio Model Science Curriculum. Both groups of majors meet a common set of course requirements in the content area, as well as requirements delineated respectively for Chemistry and for Physics majors. Coursework requirements in the content area (subject area) total of 57 hours for Chemistry majors and 60 hours for Physics majors. Paralleling their content preparation, students typically begin coursework in professional education on the CWRU campus in the sophomore year, followed by 18 semester hours taken at John Carroll University, culminating in student teaching, once Advance Standing in the teacher licensure program has been achieved.
