Dr. Brian Gran
Children's Ombudspersons (Children's
Commissioners)
Antje Daub,
Lynn Gannon, Robin Patterson, and I are conducting
cross-national research on children’s ombudspersons and
children’s commissioners. This research consists of four
projects. The first project, for which I primarily am
responsible (but to which Dawn Aliberti and Casey
Schroeder have contributed), is the legal powers
children’s ombudspersons possess. The second project,
which Robin Patterson co-directs, is the independence of
children’s ombudspersons. The third project, for which I
am primarily responsible (but to which Lynn Gannon and
Robin Patterson contribute), is how and why children’s
ombudspersons decide to use their powers. The fourth
project is an international survey of children’s
ombudspersons. Antje Daub, Lynn Gannon, Robin Patterson,
and I are completing this survey, with the hopes of
administering it in early 2006.
This
research on children’s ombudspersons have benefited from
the cooperation of the European Network of Children’s
Ombudspersons (ENOC) and its members, as well as others,
including actors and organizations in the United
Kingdom. These research projects have received support
from the British Academy, the U.S. National Science
Foundation, and Case Western Reserve University.
