The Samuel Rosenthal Center for Judaic Studies is delighted to announce that Professor David Silberklang will serve as the Rosenthal Visiting Fellow from January through May 2007 at Case Western Reserve University.
David Silberklang is a senior historian at Yad Vashem, where he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Yad Vashem Studies, a leading scholarly journal on the Holocaust. He is also a lecturer in Jewish History in the Rothberg International School at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and has taught graduate seminars in the Institute for Contemporary Jewry at Hebrew University as well. At Yad Vashem, he is also Series Editor of the survivor memoir series – the Holocaust Survivors' Memoirs Project. In April 2006 he was appointed Israel's representative on the Academic Working Group of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research.
In the past David has been a Yad Vashem educator (1982-89); Chief Historian of Yad Vashem's Museum Development Project (1994-1997), in which capacity he wrote the conceptual historical outline that served as the basis for the content of the new historical museum at Yad Vashem opened in March 2005; adjunct professor in the BA and MA programs at the IDF Military College (2002-2004); was founding Assistant Editor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies (1985-1995); and was a research historian for Scotland Yard and for the Canadian Department of Justice in connection to war crimes investigations in those countries (1989-1996).
David's research interests have included the Holocaust in Poland, Nazi population and forced labor policies in Eastern Europe, Allied responses to the Holocaust, the Jews' responses to the Holocaust. He has published numerous scholarly articles and reviews, and his book, Gates of Tears, will be coming out in Hebrew next year and in English shortly after.
David received his BA from Columbia University and his MA and PhD from the Hebrew University. He was born in Brooklyn, has been living in Israel for 27 years, and is married to Bobbie. They have four children.
During his visit to the Rosenthal Center, Professor Silberklang will be teaching two courses at for the Judaic Studies Program at Case Western Reserve University: “Issues in the Study of the Holocaust”, in the Religion and History Departments; and a seminar called “Being Human in the Holocaust”, for the SAGES program. He is available for public lectures and discussion groups.
