Clinical Placement Facilities and Internship Opportunities

Clinical Placement Facilities

A wide range of settings, patient populations, and intervention styles for practicum and pre-internship placements are available in the Cleveland area. At these facilities students develop and improve their assessment and intervention skills, as well as learn about the practical application of these skills in meeting mental health needs. Listed below are frequently used settings for clinical training.

  • Alzheimer Center of University Hospitals of Cleveland is an integrated program of clinical care, research, and medical education focusing on Alzheimer's Disease and related disorders. Neuropsychologists are critical team members in the diagnosis and treatment of behavior disorders of the elderly and of those suffering from dementia.
  • Applewood Centers was formerly the Child Guidance Center and one of the first interdisciplinary mental health clinics in the USA. It provides a wide range of clinical and consultation services for children with behavioral and emotional disorders and their families. Services include outpatient, inpatient, special schooling, and community consultation. Specialty areas are child abuse, crisis counseling, family evaluation, and therapy.
  • Baldwin Wallace College Counseling Center provides therapy for students at the west side campus. They range in age from late teens through adults.
  • Beech Brook Children's Center includes a 40-bed residential and day treatment center for emotionally disturbed children that features a family-oriented therapeutic program for children and early adolescents. It also has a community outpatient clinic and an inner-city outreach program, plus foster care and adoption divisions.
  • Bellfaire Children's Treatment Center has a residential facility to diagnose and treat children with severe behavioral and emotional problems. In addition to out-patient and long-term therapeutic care, it has an on-campus school for residents and day students, and provides consultation to local schools.
  • Case Western Reserve University Counseling Center provides students with therapy and crisis counseling. It's staff works closely with those in University Hospitals Department of Psychiatry and other appropriate community resources.
  • CWRU Psychology Cliniche CWRU Psychology Clinic is a mental health service and training center operated by the Department of Psychology. Therapy services are provided by graduate students enrolled in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at CWRU. All student therapists are closely supervised by licensed psychologists.
  • Cleveland Clinic Foundation is a large private hospital with specialized psychiatric services for adolescents, children with eating disorders, and pain management patients.
  • Cleveland Veterans Administration Medical Center operates two hospitals. The University Circle facility is a 500-bed medical-surgical hospital. The Brecksville division is a neuropsychiatric hospital with approximately 600 beds.
  • Hanna Pavilion of University Hospitals provides short and long-term psychiatric care for in-patients and out-patients.
  • MetroHealth Medical Center is a 500+ bed public hospital affiliated with the CWRU Medical School. It is the city's near west side in an old neighborhood with a large, ethnically mixed population. Placements are in the assessment, adult, child, and rehabilitation units, providing both in and out-patient care.
  • Meyers Research Center at Menorah Park Center for Aging is an applied research facility where advanced students can use their clinical skills to develop new assessment methods and intervention programs for cognitively impaired older adults.
  • Northcoast Behavioral Health Care System : North and South Campuses are state facilities which were formerly Cleveland Psychiatric Hospital and Western Reserve Psychiatric Hospital. The North Campus provides intake and short-term placement for persons in acute psychiatric distress. The South Campus hospital is for chronically ill patients and those on forensic wards.
  • Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital of University Hospitals is a 250-bed regional pediatric facility which includes a large Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit and a number of out-patient clinics. It serves children and adolescents with neurological and behavioral problems, medical-surgical patients, and those with chronic illnesses.
