Program Description
Noyce Mentoring Experiences
During their junior year, Noyce Fellows register for EDUC 325 each semester. The course is 4 credits and taken over the course of an academic year (2 credits per semester with credit granted at the completion of the second semester). Through EDUC 325, students are placed in a partner high school, where they participate in an intensive and innovative mentoring program. Noyce scholars spend one morning per week in their assigned classroom. They form a "reflective triad" with a master high school teacher and a CWRU faculty member. As part of the course, Noyce Fellows meet monthly in a cohort group with CWRU Teacher Education staff and their school mentors to discuss teaching issues and reflect on their teaching experiences. Partner high schools include Early College, Architecture and Design (both located at John Hay High School), Cleveland Heights High School, and Shaker Heights High School.
CWRU students who begin the Noyce program in the Spring semester of their junior year will register for EDUC 325-2 in the Spring semesterof their junior year and EDUC 325-1 in the Fall semester of their senior year.
The mentoring relationships established in the junior year will continue through the teacher candidates' early teaching career facilitated by advanced information technology platforms. Thus, in their first year teaching, candidates will be supported by many individuals: by their junior year mentor, student teaching supervisor, faculty advisor, school mentors, and as importantly, by their cohort Noyce Fellows peers. This support network will help new teachers face new experiences and challenges successfully.
