News and Announcements

- For the past six years, the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education have sponsored International Education Week, intended to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The week, which is celebrated on college campuses, K-12 schools, businesses, and community organizations nationwide, is a part of the Department of State and Education’s efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. International Education Week will be observed worldwide next week (November 14-28, 2005) and Case will be a part of the celebration, with a number of scheduled activities. For more information, visit http://www.case.edu/news/2005/11-05/educ.htm.

- While an undergraduate at The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, and later as a graduate student at Loyola University Chicago, Sara Waller, a new faculty member in philosophy in Arts and Sciences, began to develop her interest in the psychology of human language and how the mind works. This interest in language eventually led to research in dolphin communication. Now at Case, Waller is continuing her work with plans to engage undergraduates in her research by correlating video images with sounds to decipher and discover possible language and words that dolphins use in the wild. For more information on Waller’s work, visit http://www.case.edu/news/2005/11-05/waller.htm.

- Just a reminder that “Einstein's Legacy—Science, Technology & Culture through the 21st Century” will take place on Monday, November 14. The a daylong symposium is being held in conjunction with the worldwide World Year of Physics celebration, marking the 100th anniversary of Albert Einstein’s “miraculous year” in which he published three important papers describing ideas that have since influenced all of modern physics.
