University History Project

History and Vision

The elements of the University's current vision include several items that are entirely consistent with important characteristics of its history, and with the manner in which this project will be conducted. Among these are: Partnerships: Perhaps no other university in this country is so closely intertwined with its institutional neighbors, principally those in University Circle.

• Transformation: Virtually no other university has taken such a bold step as to create itself anew through a merger of two predecessor institutions.

• Experiential learning: This is a recent focus for undergraduate education, but it has long been integral to the University's graduate and professional programs.

• Community: CWRU is at once a product of its region and a player at the global level. A better grasp of the history of town-gown interactions here - and how they contrast with those of other institutions - will be helpful in integrating these characteristics.
