The Department of History at Case
Western Reserve University was founded in 1888, although
the teaching of historical subjects goes back to the origins
of Western Reserve University College in 1826. Henry Eldridge
Bourne, Bernadotte Schmitt, Lynn Thorndike, Carl Wittke,
and Harvey Wish are among the noted historians associated
with the department in its first sixty years.
Today, the
department offers courses leading to the B.A., the M.A.,
and Ph.D. degrees in history, with the graduate division
emphasizing two focused programs: Social History and
Policy, and History of Science, Technology, Environment,
and Medicine. Each is structured to provide intensive
education in the respective specialty fields, while also
offering broad exposure to historical developments, theories,
and guiding themes. It is also possible for students to
work outside either of these two tracks.
