Please Note: This information applies only to writing faculty (English lecturers, SAGES lecturers, English graduate TAs, and other graduate instructors in the University). Those interested in becoming SAGES or Presidential Fellows should contact the SAGES office directly.
Writing faculty in SAGES work in two primary roles: providing supplemental and one-on-one support in the Writing Resource Center (WRC), and assisting in First and some University Seminars. Each teaching unit is compensated at around $3,500-$4,000. SAGES writing faculty are typically assigned 2 teaching units per semester (a combination of Writing Consultancies and Writing Instructorships), based on the following assumptions for each unit:
Writing Consultants – 1 Teaching Unit
- > Provide 10 hours of scheduled tutoring time per week in the Writing Resource Center (providing one-on-one writing instruction, consulting with SAGES students and instructors, developing writing support materials for the Writing@Case website, etc.).
- > Upon request, may also be assigned to one or more SAGES seminars for some or all of their weekly tutoring hours (as writing liaisons). Such assignments include working closely with faculty to develop appropriate writing assignments, workshops, and other writing support activities.
- > Receive mentoring support through the Director of the Writing Resource Center and the Director of Composition.
Writing Instructors – 1 Teaching Unit
- > Attend all class meetings .
- > Provide written and oral feedback on writing to students (17) throughout the semester.
- > Consult with Co-Instructor on syllabus design, classroom activities, etc.
- > Provide in-class writing instruction as necessary & appropriate.
- > Develop discipline-specific writing assignments as appropriate.
- > Receive mentoring support through the Director of Composition.
Teaching in SAGES is an opportunity to work closely with faculty members from a variety of disciplines. The experience of working with students on their writing is one that is both rewarding and transferable to other teaching situations.
To be eligible to teach in SAGES, writing instructors must complete ENGL 400 or its equivalent at another university or have had comparable pedagogical experience. (See also Training.)

Pedagogy Seminar Series – In their first year of teaching at Case, all writing faculty must participate in the Pedagogy Seminar Series offered by the English department each fall semester.
