Masters of the American Cinema
Flashback: A Brief History of Film
Godard and Others
Coming from a blue-collar working-class background, I had virtually no exposure to the traditional arts. However, I did see a lot of movies, which I loved. Once I got to college I realized that my strengths were in the area of the arts, especially literature and drama. In the late 1960s, I began my teaching career as a specialist in 18th century British literature. I soon realized that the new discipline of Film Studies was far more interesting to me. Film was an art that combined many of my other interests, such as drama, literature, popular culture, the social sciences, acting, journalism, photography, dance and painting. I have never regretted my choice.
