Minor in Italian

For students beginning Italian at the introductory level: 101, 102, 201, 202 and
one 300-level course for 3 credits.

For students beginning Italian at the 200-level:
A minimum of 5 courses totaling 15 credits is required. The course sequence ITAL 201, ITAL 202, ITAL 311 and at least two ITAL 399 courses for 3 credits each results in 17 credits in Italian to earn the minor.

Italian Course Descriptions

ITAL 101. Elementary Italian I (4)
(Credit for ITAL 101 only upon completion of ITAL 102.) Introductory course; stress on mastery of the sound system and basic sentence structure of spoken and written Italian.

ITAL 102. Elementary Italian II (4)
Continuation of ITAL 101; attendance in the language laboratory is required in addition to scheduled class meetings. Prereq: ITAL 101.

ITAL 201. Review and Progress in Italian (4)
Emphasizes language and culture. Review of Italian grammar and usage while studying written forms. Language laboratory attendance required in addition to scheduled class meetings. Prereq: ITAL 102 or equivalent.

ITAL 202. Read and Discuss Italian Texts (4)
Focus on improving linguistic skills acquired in elementary Italian and on mastering short narratives. Review of Italian grammar and usage through reading, conversation, and media. Language laboratory attendance required in addition to scheduled class meetings. Prereq: ITAL 201 or equivalent.

ITAL 308 (3)

The Italian Experience — Supervised Study in Italy

A three-week summer study course in Italy which includes travel to important locations and an extended stay at L'Universita` di Urbino Carlo Bo in Urbino, Italy, a city well-known for its cultural and linguistic heritage. This course focuses on language immersion and the processing of cultural experience.  It features intense collaboration with Italian student peers and seminars co-taught by Italian faculty.  Students meet Mondays through Fridays in a formal setting for advanced language study designed to improve proficiency in speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing.  Visits to museums, galleries, and cultural events are included.  Prerequisite: ITAL 202 or permission.

ITAL 311. Conversation in Italian (3)
Solely focused on oral communication, ITAL 311 is designed to enhance listening/comprehension skills in Italian. Using audio-visual materials, students acquire the skills necessary to understand conversations between native-speakers and to emulate them. The situational and functional approach to the course facilitates progress towards advanced-level fluency in Italian. Prereq: ITAL 202 or equivalent.

ITAL 399. Independent Study (1-3)
For students under special circumstances. Prereq: Consent of department.
