Step back into the future to the twenty-first century, and encounter the modern, vibrant, living, dynamic language of the State of Israel. Go on a journey into the future; study Hebrew and make time irrelevant.
Study in Israel is highly recommended. Semester and academic-year programs for international/overseas students are offered at major universities, as are concentrated Hebrew language (“Ulpan”) summer semester programs.
While all efforts will be made to grant appropriate credit for courses taken at an Israeli university, students are advised to seek permission and to verify eligibility for credit transfer for each program, before making any commitments.
CWRU’s College of Arts and Sciences has partnered with the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel, one of the world’s top universities, in a unique study abroad program. The program is open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors in all majors, and features internships and SAGES Capstone possibilities. Previous knowledge of Hebrew is not required.

Any Hebrew course may be used to fulfill the SAGES requirement of Arts and Humanities; any 200 or 300- level Hebrew course may be used to fulfill the SAGES requirement of Global and Cultural Diversity.
HBRW 101: Elementary Modern Hebrew I (4)
Students will become acquainted with the Hebrew alphabet and vowels, and with basic grammar and vocabulary. The emphasis will be on the development of basic communicative skills in standard Modern Hebrew.
Prerequisites: None.
HBRW 102: Elementary Modern Hebrew II (4)
Students will continue to develop basic communicative skills in standard Modern Hebrew. Participants will be introduced to more complex grammatical constructs, linguistic forms and vocabulary.
Prerequisites: HBRW 101, or permission of department.
HBRW 201: Intermediate Modern Hebrew I (4)
Students’ Hebrew communicative skills will be enhanced by studying the language in its cultural context. The focus will be on speaking, reading and writing, with an emphasis on the use of the language as reflected in Israeli culture.
Prerequisites: HBRW 102, or permission of department.
HBRW 202: Intermediate Modern Hebrew II (4)
Students’ Hebrew language skills will be strengthened by developing their ability to express thoughts, ideas and opinions freely, in both verbal and written forms.
Prerequisites: HBRW 201, or permission of department.
HBRW 301: Advanced Modern Hebrew I (3)
Students’ language skills will be enhanced by developing their ability to use an advanced level of Hebrew effectively. Classes will be conducted in Hebrew, and will focus on speaking, reading and writing with an emphasis on active and creative use of the language.
Prerequisites: HBRW 202, or permission of department.
HBRW 302: Advanced Modern Hebrew II (3)
Classes will be conducted in Hebrew. Students will study the language within the domain of Hebrew literature, and will be expected to perform detailed literary analyses in Hebrew.
Prerequisites: HBRW 301, or permission of department.
HBRW 399: Independent Studies (1-3)
May be repeated for credit. The course is for students with special interests and commitments that are not fully addressed in regular courses, and who wish to work independently.
Prerequisite: permission of department.
