the florence keuerleber prize

Florence Keuerleber graduated from Flora Stone Mather in 1922 with a bachelor's degree in history and Latin, and began teaching in Sugarcreek, Ohio that fall. Two years later she was hired by Dover Public Schools to teach in Dover High School on the condition that she would teach French. She went back to summer school at FSM to get her Master's in French and spent 42 years (total) teaching. She retired in 1966.

Her early years were spent teaching history, French, and Latin. As enrollment and interest in languages increased and Latin was no longer taught, she was the advanced-level French teacher with full time Spanish and German teachers plus a teacher qualified to teach French and Spanish in the Department. She was responsible for starting programs that took language exposure to 5th and 6th grade students and offerings to 7th and 8th grade students. It is interesting to note that she also spoke German fluently. (Her family was German and owned a furniture store in Dover.)
