Germany and the Nazi Past:
Generational Responses to Holocaust, Nazism, and WW II
In this course we will analyze how representatives from different generations respond to the Nazi past. Our focus will be on literary works and films, which we will study within their historical, cultural and theoretical contexts. Furthermore, we will explore other media of engagement with the past, such as museums and monuments. As a special feature of the course, two weeks of the class will be conducted in conjunction with the Max-Kade-Workshop which will be held by the well-known German-language author Gila Lustiger. Additional writers read in the course include I. Bachmann, H. Böll, W. Borchert, G. Grass, and U. Timm, as well as films such as The Murderers Are Among Us, Napola, and Sophie Scholl. Grading is based on participation, a presentation, a midterm exam, and papers. The course is conducted in German.
