David P. Benseler (PhD, Oregon) is emeritus Emile B. de Sauzé Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures. He was the Founding Chair of the CWRU Program in German Studies and Founding Director of the CWRU Max Kade Center for German Studies. He served as chair of the CWRU Department of Modern Languages and Literatures from 1991-98; service elsewhere includes Assistant Chair, Washington State University; two terms as Chair, Department of German, Ohio State University. Other highlights: editor, The Modern Language Journal [1980-93]; Distinguished Visiting Professor, United States Military Academy, West Point, and New Mexico State University; "Alumni Fellow, Western Washington University"; Mortar Board "Top Prof" at CWRU. The President of Germany awarded him that nation’s Distinguished Service Cross; the Commanding General and Superintendent of the United States Military Academy honored him with the Army Commendation Medal for Outstanding Civilian Service. Recent books: A Comprehensive Index to The Modern Language Journal, 1916-1996 [Blackwell, 2000] and Teaching German in Twentieth-Century America [Wisconsin, 2001]. Editor, The Dynamics of Language Program Direction; co-editor, Teaching German in America: Prolegomena to a History. He is co-compiler/editor of the electronic version of the Comprehensive Index. He currently serves on the editorial board of four scholarly periodicals and of a book series.
