DITTRICK MEDICAL HISTORY CENTER

There will be no better time to savor the richness of Scotland’s medical and cultural heritage than in 2005. This is the “year of medicine” in Scotland, prompted by the Quincentenary – yes, that’s right, the 500 th anniversary -- of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Special exhibits and programs abound this year, and this tour is designed to take advantage of that unique opportunity. Blue Badge guide Iris Barry and I have fashioned a trip that includes behind-the-scenes curatorial tours at museums in Glasgow and Edinburgh, special exhibitions on the theme of art and medicine, and banquets at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Colleagues James Beaton in Glasgow and Dawn Kemp and Caroline Smith in Edinburgh will welcome us at their respective museums and libraries, and share the fascinating riches of the collections in their care. Scottish hospitality and good cheer will be part of the fare, too, especially transiting the Highlands via Stirling and the Trossachs. If we’re lucky, there’ll be a ceildh with pipers in store. And of course we have factored into the trip time for your personal interests, be they shopping (woolens and whiskey!), theatre, or the arts generally. So, please consider joining me on this unique travel opportunity. Jim Edmonson Download complete brochure and registration form.
