Special lecture by Joel D. Howell, M.D. PhD.

Machines and medicine: tools, technology, and the transformation of patient care

Joel HpwellPond's Sphygmograph, 1879This event will mark the reopening of the Dittrick's collection of historic diagnostic instruments in the museum's balcony display area. The notable donation in 2008 of the M. Donald Blaufox collection of stethoscopes and blood pressure measurement devices significantly enhanced our holdings of diagnostic instrumentation. Now, after a complete refurbishment of our exhibits on this important topic, we are formally dedicating the M. Donald Blaufox Hall of Diagnostic Instruments.

Opening comments will be offered by Jim Edmonson and Don Blaufox, to be followed by a special lecture by Joel D. Howell, M.D. PhD. Dr. Howell, the Victor Vaughan Professor of History of Medicine at the University of Michigan, will explore the impact and role of technology in medicine.

Dr. Howell is the author of Technology in the hospital: Transforming patient care in the early twentieth century (1995) and has written widely on the use of medical technology, examining the social and contextual factors relevant to its clinical application and diffusion, analyzing why American medicine became so wed to the use of medical technology. For his presentation at the opening of Blaufox Hall, Dr. Howell will explore the impact of technology upon diagnosis and the dynamics of the physician-patient relationship.

Lecture 6:00 pm Ford Auditorium, reception to follow in the galleries of the Museum, Allen Memorial Medical Library, 11000 Euclid Ave., Cleveland Ohio, 44106
