John Pascal Sawyer (1862-1945)
John Pascal
Sawyer was a distinguished gastroenterologist. He was the son of Pascal
Hall Sawyer, a physician in Kent, Ohio. The family moved to Cleveland
around 1873, where Sawyer finished high school at Central High School.
He went on to attend Adelbert College, and earn his medical degree from
Western Reserve University in 1886. He studied physiology in Berlin in
1887-88, and in Freiberg from 1891-94. Dr. Sawyer held a succession of
posts at Western Reserve University. He was lecturer of Physiology, Director
of the laboratory of physiology, Professor of Physiology, Therapeutics,
and of Clinical Medicine, retiring as Emeritus Professor of Clinical Medicine.
He received an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Western Reserve University
in 1941. Sawyer was also a charter member of the CMLA and served as its
president.
