Shipwreck Camp 2013

Science and Exploration For Youth Ages 12-15
Weekdays, July 15 through July 26, 2013
9:30a.m. – 3:30p.m.

Join us for a virtual adventure to find a shipwreck in Lake Erie! Inspired by the research and exploration of Dr. Robert Ballard, father of the JASON Project, the Immersion Presents Program, and finder of the wreckage of the Titanic, this camp will engage campers in field science and exploration weekdays from 9:30a.m. – 3:30p.m. (times may vary, depending on event planned) starting Monday, July 15, 2013.

In partnership with the Cuyahoga County Public Library and Cleveland Lakefront State Park (ODNR), the Gelfand STEM Center brings back Shipwreck Camp. Youth ages 12-15 participate in an expedition to find shipwrecks in Lake Erie. For more information, call 216-368-5075. Cost of this two week camp is $525, includes $25 application fee. Applications will be available in April, 2013.
campers will:
*read novels related to exploration
*meet local experts
*build remotely operated vehicles for underwater exploration
*conduct the research necessary to find a wreck in Lake Erie
*use the tools of a scientist, conduct field research
*embrace the history of the Great Lakes region
*immerse themselves in an introduction to SCUBA and snorkeling
*develop navigational skills on land and water
*discover what weather contributes to shipwrecks in the Great Lakes
*develop a plan and find a wreck
*share discoveries

Campers will have their experiences at Case Western Reserve University and other sites throughout the camp (e.g. Cleveland Lakefront State Park) Each camper must be at least 12 years old, or, not older than 15 by the start of camp on July 15, 2013.

Campers should be in good health, be able to get into and out of small or large boats and, at minimum, not be afraid of water, insects, boats, the out of doors. Swimming skills are advantageous but not required. Familiarity with internet searches and computer skills in Microsoft Office software packages are helpful in compiling reports and building expedition plans. Students will be working in teams and some activities will be photographed or video taped.

Cost of this two week inquiry based camp is $525.  A $25 non-refundable application fee is included in this cost. This camp fee covers the cost of a daily lunch.
