Technology continues to advance at a
rapid pace, especially in the field of medicine and
biology. As a result of such “progress” society is faced
with certain ethical dilemmas. Today’s young students
will soon be faced with decisions that have profound
bioethical implications, and the results of these
decisions will affect their lives as well as those of
future generations. Dealing with such bioethical issues
will require both a good understanding of science and
the ability to distinguish fact from opinion.
The Science and Societal Issues Symposium provides a
forum for junior high and high school students to
address a challenging list of topics to research and
debate. Teams of students research a topic from among
those suggested, discuss the ethical and societal
implications, and give original and extremely creative
presentations in the format of their choosing. Both the
originality of the presentation and the quality of the
information are considered in the judging process.
