  • This FREE public event will be held at Cleveland Lakefront State Park Headquarters, 8701 Lakeshore Blvd NE, Cleveland.  Hands-on Science activities from Dr. Robert Ballard's Immersion Presents Ocean Exploration program will engage all who attend in real science.  This program is offered in collaboration with the Park System, the Center for Science and Mathematics Education, and Cuyahoga County Public Library.  Reservations are requested.  Please call 216-881-8141 x3001.

  • April 4, 2009, Sunday 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m, Professional Development for Immersion Presents: Ocean Exploration

  • This professional development opportunity for After School leaders, Children & Teen Librarians, Teachers, Informal Educators, Day Care Center Providers, Science Club Leaders, Home School Families and others interested in hands - on science is sponsored by the Cuyahoga County Public Library and the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation..  This free program will feature Dr. Sara Waller, Case Western Reserve University, Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science, who will share her Dolphin Communication research.  *Ocean Exploration* curriculum , focused on 5th - 8th grade level youth, will be provided to registered participants.   • June 15 - July 10, 2009, Future Connections for Cleveland Metropolitan Schools High School Students

  • Eleventh and 12th grade level CMSD students participate in a four week research focused work preparation and career exploration experience on campus.  An additional four weeks of work experiences in business settings follows.
  • June 15 – 26, 2009, Walking in Darwin’s Footsteps: A Darwin Year Workshop

  • Walking in Darwin’s Footsteps will examine the pillars of evidence Darwin used to develop his theory of evolution by natural selection, will advance Darwin’s ideas to include the modern evolutionary synthesis, and will explore the mechanisms of evolution and speciation. We will use a combination of field work at Squire Valleevue Farm, classroom activities, laboratory experiments, and collections from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to investigate diversity and unity in biological systems, the fossil record, the biogeographical distribution of organisms, the mechanisms that generate variability, and the processes that bring about changes in gene frequency in populations over time.
  • June 24, 2009, Wednesday, 10:00a.m. - 3:00p.m. : Great Lakes Shipping Education Chest Professional Development (K-8)

  • Cleveland Lakefront State Park Headquarters The Great Lakes Maritime Transportation Education Program: Great Lakes Shipping Education Chest is filled with tools to deliver an educational program about commerce on the Great Lakes. It includes a Great Lakes Basin floor map, shipping vessel playing cards, children's literature, videos/DVD's , curriculum materials, and samples of containerized cargo (taconite, grain, salt, limestone, etc.)  You can borrow this Chest after attending this professional development session designed for formal and informal educators.  Learn more about the Great Lakes watershed, shipping, geography, and culture using this kit!  Save the date.   • *This FREE public event will be held at Cleveland Lakefront State Park Headquarters, 8701 Lakeshore Blvd NE, Cleveland. Hands-on Science activities from Dr. Robert Ballard's Immersion Presents Ocean Exploration program will engage all who attend in real science. We'll practice our compass navigational skills, create tools of an explorer, have a scavenger hunt, and simulate a remote search for a shipwreck in a "Who sunk my battleship" type game. This program is offered in collaboration with the Park System, the Center for Science and Mathematics Education, and Cuyahoga County Public Library. Reservations are requested. July 2009

  • July 20 - July 31, 2009, 9:30a.m. - 3:30p.m Daily, Shipwreck Camp 2009

  • In partnership with the Cuyahoga County Public Library and Cleveland Lakefront State Park (ODNR), the Center for Science and Mathematics Education brings back Shipwreck Camp.  Twelve to 15 year old youth participate in an expedition to find shipwrecks in Lake Erie.  For more information, call 216-368-5075.  Cost of this two week camp is $450, includes  $25 application fee.  Applications will be available in April, 2009.

August 2009

  • August 10-14, 2009 9:30a.m.- 2:30p.m. Environmental Heroes Orientation-Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation

  • Select 12-15 year olds will be preparing to continue to the research around the question: What factors impact the abundance and distribution of amphibians and reptiles in the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks.

September 2009

  • September 15, 2009 4:00p.m. - 6:00p.m. Environmental Heroes After School Program

  • This year round, after school research program for youth begins year two at the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation, collecting, recording, and analyzing data around the research question: What factors impact the abundance and distribution of amphibians and reptiles in the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation.

October 2009

  • October 16, 2009, Friday, 9:30a.m. - 4:00p.m. Immersion Presents: Ocean Exploration

  • This professional development opportunity for After School leaders, Children & Teen Librarians, Teachers, Informal Educators, Day Care Center Providers, Science Club Leaders, Home School Families and others interested in hands - on science features Immersion Presents Adventure Series: Ocean Exploration curriculum for 5th - 8th grade level students. Designed for after school , hands-on science experiences, this program will connect to the exploration of Dr. Robert Ballard, oceanographer-explorer-finder of the Titanic. Virtually travel to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary to learn about shipwrecks, simulate a search for a sunken ship in the Black Sea, and develop strategies to prevent over-fishing off the coast of Newfoundland in the Grand Banks area of the North American continental shelf.
