Ovid's Tomis

A Journey to Ovid

In April 2004, Prof. Martin Helzle travelled to the Black Sea coast of Romania on a fact finding mission related to Ovid's exile in Tomis, modern Constanta, between AD 9 and 18. The two questions to be answered were:
1. What was the standard of living in ancient cities along the Black Sea?
2. Are any of the features Ovid describes borne out by the geography on site?

The pictures below were collected to answer these two questions. They are presented here without commentary. All pictures are the intellectual property of Prof. Helzle. They may be used for teaching or research purposes only.
Many of these pictures could never have been taken without the extraordinary support of Mrs. Ildiko Deac and Mr. Mihai Negrescu who run the Vila Irina in Constanta where Prof. Helzle stayed (www.vilairina.ro). This page is dedicated to them in gratitude.
