The 2009 Cleveland Archaeological Society Student Internship in Archaeology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History

Program Dates: June 8 to July 31, 2009

The Department of Archaeology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH) will once again offer The Cleveland Archaeological Society Internship in Archaeology. The purpose of this eight-week internship is to give a deserving Ohio college student the opportunity to receive specialized training in field archaeology and laboratory analysis through active participation in the Department's research program in prehistoric archaeology. During the first five weeks of the Summer 2009 program, the intern will assist Curator of Archaeology, Dr. Brian Redmond and staff in the excavation of a prehistoric Native American settlement located near Milan in Erie County, Ohio. In this first phase of the program, the intern will participate in the Museum's summer Field School in Archaeology and receive advanced instruction in all aspects of field research including transit surveying, techniques of hand excavation, artifact identification, mapping, and photography. Room, board, and per diem expenses during the five-week field season will be covered by the CMNH if the intern lives beyond commuting distance. After returning from the field, the intern will participate in a three-week program of laboratory work which will provide experience in flotation processing and the documentation and analysis of cultural remains (e.g., pottery, stone tools, bone tools, animal and plant remains, etc.) recovered during the field season. The intern is responsible for his/her own lodging and expenses during the three-week laboratory portion of the program. The project will conclude with a summary report of internship activities to be submitted to the Curator and the program sponsor. For his or her participation in the program, the intern will receive a total payment of $2,240 for the eight-week program. Preference will be given to applicants with some previous archaeological field experience.
