Program Dates: July 1 to August 24, 2013
This eight-week internship will give a deserving Ohio college student the opportunity to receive specialized training in field archaeology and laboratory analysis through active participation in Cleveland State University's summer field school program. During the first five weeks of the program, the intern will assist Archaeology staff in the excavation of either a prehistoric or historic site located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Summit County, Ohio and receive advanced instruction in all aspects of field research. After returning from the field, the intern will participate in a three-week program of laboratory work in CSU's archaeological curation laboratory which will provide experience in the documentation and analysis of cultural remains (e.g., pottery, stone and bone tools, animal/plant remains, etc.) recovered during the field school. The Intern is responsible for his/her own lodging during the field school and subsequent laboratory work. The project will conclude with a summary report of internship activities to be submitted to the Director of the Cleveland State University archaeological field school program and to the program sponsor. In addition, the Intern will also be asked to present a brief PowerPoint presentation summarizing the results of his/her research in a public presentation at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History prior to a CAS lecture. For participation in the program the intern will receive a total payment of $2,400 for the eight-week program. Preference will be given to applicants with some previous archaeological field experience.
