Department of Chemistry Welcomes Prof. Viswanathan

In August 2008, the Department of Chemistry welcomed its newest Assistant Professor, Dr. Rajesh Viswanathan. He and his wife, Nirmala Krishnamurthy, have come to Cleveland from the University of Utah. This fall, Prof. Viswanathan is teaching CHEM 435: Synthetic Methods in Organic Chemistry.

Prof. Zagorski awarded Presidential Research Initiative Grant

Profs. Michael Zagorski and Brian Cobb (pathology) were awarded $75,000 for work on "Carbohydrate Structural Epitopes and Novel Antigenic Activity".

Graduate Smita Dayal Wins Prestigious Research Award

Graduate student Smita Dayal, a member of Prof. Clemens Burda's research group, recently won a prestigious National Graduate Research Award, the Closs Award in Photochemistry. This is given annually to the best Ph.D. work in Photochemistry in both South and North America, selected and awarded by the I-APS (Inter-American Photochemical Society).


Dr. Crespo-Hernández investigates photodegradation of nitropyrene

Professor Carlos Crespo-Hernández recently published a paper in The Journal of Physical Chemistry investigating the photochemical degradation of the harmful pollutant 1-nitropyrene.

Undergraduate Thomas Teets Wins Prestigious Fellowship

Thomas Teets, a senior chemistry major in the College of Arts and Sciences, is one of 15 students to receive a five-year graduate fellowship from the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation. The foundation's mission is to identify and cultivate talent in the applied physical, biological, and engineering sciences; its full, unrestricted support—valued at a quarter of a million dollars for each awardee—gives the Hertz Fellows the freedom to conduct innovative research at universities of their choice. This year's fellows were chosen from among 580 applicants nationwide.


New Departmental Single Crystal X-ray Diffractometer

A new cyber-enabled Bruker SMART APEX II CCD single crystal X-ray diffractometer, funded by NSF, has arrived and is now operating in the Department of Chemistry. The facility, overseen by Professor Protasiewicz, also houses a lot of other new equipment.

Ishan Roy, a third-year chemistry student, was one of only two Americans recently invited to attend the 2006 Lindau Nobel Prize Laureates Conference in Germany. The conference was an opportunity for students to meet some of the world's top chemists.

Case chemistry prof wins award

Clemens Burda, assistant professor of chemistry at Case Western Reserve University, recently received an award of achievement at the American Chemical Society's national meeting in Washington, D.C. He was recognized for "Chemistry and Properties of Nanocrystals of Different Shapes," his article in ACS' journal, Chemical Reviews.

Professor Guo recipient of New Investigator Award in Carbohydrate Chemistry

Dr. Guo will receive the third New Investigator Award in Carbohydrate Chemistry of ACS. The award recognizes "excellence of contributions to carbohydrate chemistry by innovative young scientists in the early stage of their career".

Guo is being recognized for his work on new synthetic methods for glycopeptides, chemical synthesis of GPIs and GPI-anchored structures and development of novel strategies to overcome the problem of immunotolerance to tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens for the design of new cancer immunotherapies.


Emeritus Professor Gilles Klopman, recipient of Patterson-Crane Award in Chemical Information

Gilles Klopman was named the 2005 winner of the Patterson-Crane Award in Chemical Information. This ACS sponsored award is given every two years by the Columbus and Dayton sections of ACS, and is open internationally.

A banquet will be held to bestow the award and hear his award address on May 11.

George A. Olah, 2005 Priestley Medalist

George A. Olah, 1994 Chemistry Nobel laureate who did much of his Nobel Prize winning research as a member of the Case Department of Chemistry, has been named the 2005 Priestley Medalist. This highest honor of the American Chemical Society recognizes Professor Olah's distinguished services to chemistry.

Dr. Burda selected for attendance at National Acadamies meeting

Dr. Burda was one of 86 of the nations top nanotechnology researchers selected to attend the recent National Academies Keck Futures Initiative conference. This selection made him eligible to compete for a seed grant aimed at advancing interdisciplinary work in nanotechnology.

Dr. Kenney, Dr. Oleinik and Pc4 in the news

Dr. Kenney, Professor of Chemistry, and Dr. Oleinik, Professor of Radiation Oncology, make the news again with their cancer drug Pc4.

Pc4 is a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer. It has been previously tested on internal cancers, and has now entered clinical trials on skin cancer.

Ogenix Corp., co-founded by Dr. Scherson, is a runner-up in the Biotech-Medical category of Dow Jones' 2004 Technology Innovation Awards.

Pat Eland and Jim Faulk to Receive Staff Service Awards

Pat Eland and Jim Faulk will be recognized at the Staff Service Awards Luncheon. The staff awards are presented in recognition of the contributions of individual staff employees toward the success of the university. Jim, who serves the department in the capacity of Lab Technician and Pat, who is the Department Assistant and Secretary to the Chairman, are both celebrating 10 years with the university. The awards will be presented by President Hundert.


Undergraduate Presented with Yeager Award

Congratulations to Tiffany Copeland, this year's winner of the Ernest B. Yeager Award from the Cleveland Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy and the American Chemical Society. Ms. Copeland, who performs undergraduate research in Prof. Cather Simpson's laboratory, was also an Honorable Mention for an NSF Predoctoral Fellowship. She will be attending Stanford U. for graduate studies in Chemistry in the fall.

Recent JACS Publication from Garner Group

April of 2004 saw the publication of an article authored by Dr. Philip Garner's research group, entitled "The α-Helical Peptide Nucleic Acid Concept: Merger of Peptide Secondary Structure and Codified Nucleic Acid Recognition". This paper describes a chemistry-based approach to nucleic acid surrogate design that could be used for the development of novel drug platforms. The work was performed by students in the Department of Chemistry in collaboration with faculty from the Medical School.

Dr. Burda's Grants and Award Nominations

Dr. Clemens Burda has been awarded a Presidential Research Initiative Grant for 2004/2005 in collaboration with Prof. A. Abramson in Mechanical Engineering. He has also been nominated for the Wittke Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching
