In Memory of Dr. Ignacio J. Ocasio 1952-2005

Doc Oc, a classically trained pianist and prodigiously talented chemistry professor, came to the Case campus in 1980. Since that time, thousands of students have passed through his chemistry courses and have been infected by his energy, enthusiasm, and dedication. Doc Oc won numerous teaching awards, including the Wittke Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching in 1993. He was totally dedicated to helping students develop not only academically, but also as members of society. He supported students outside the classroom as well as inside, whether it was through his celebrity judging of the Mr. CWRU contest, as Hudson Relay coach to the first-year class, or as fraternity advisor. Most of all we will remember him as a caring friend whose uplifting personality would instantly bring smiles to our faces even on the gloomiest of days.

No one knows what to say Doc. You meant more to more people than you will ever know. You are why I am a chem major, why I am still at Case, and a great part of why I am in school at all. Letters and words on this wall can't begin to express the pain in our hearts or the tears shed over your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. -nrs
For any who haven't seen it yet, a memorial site was put up for Doc Oc at http://blog.case.edu/dococ/. Please go check it out and comment there as well.

Dear Doc, You were truly among those special people who dedicated their lives to reaching out to others. I pray that you are resting in peace. God bless you.
Doc-- Seeing this wall and the testaments others have given is hardly evidence to the impact you had on so many people. You epitomized Case for me and it is difficult to think of campus without you. What saddens me most is to know your presence will no longer be felt by any other following classes -- no more quips to be shared or names to be memorized. I can only aspire to live with the grace and elegance you did. I don’t speak alone when I say you helped make my first year as meaningful as it was, and for that I will be ever grateful. Hats off to you on a life so beautifully lived. Cheers. --dkl
Doc--Thanks for all the heart and soul you put into your work and into your life in general. You touched so many lives and will not be forgotten. You were undoubtedly the most caring and sincere professor I have ever encountered and didn't forget about me even when my time in your class came to a close. This is truely the end of something amazing. Rest in peace and may God bless you and your family. -Erica

Doc - it is going to be tough walking near your office knowing that i can not stop in to chat with a man i dearly respected and whose company I always loved. You have helped me out so much through the years in and out of the classroom. You were a true friend in the greatest sense and you will always have a special spot in my heart. I knew something was up when you told me exactly what you did a week b4 your surgery and I am sorry I mislead you, but I new you were a tough guy with a big heart. I was hoping things were gonna turn alright and the only thing that turned out alright was the fact that everyone knows how many lives you have touched and the impact you have had for this university. God bless you doc and my condolences go out to your family (que dios te bendiga) - rpa
Doc, you were truly an inspiration to everyone that knew you. As the entire Case campus mourns the loss of a man that was endowed by God with sincerity and love for all people, a remarkable intellect, and a dedication to helping students reach their full potential, I will be sad, but at the same time I will think of the memories I have of you and how fortunate I was to be able to get to know you and to be taught by you. God called you to eternal life because He wanted you more than we did, but our memory of you will stay with us forever. May God grant you mercy and peace. -Chris
Those who have written here are the smallest tip of the iceberg of those affected by your loss. No list of mourners, no paragraphs of mere words, nothing that simple can express how deeply you touched the lives of those who knew you. Everyone has gained something by the time you spent here; you were a teacher, a mentor, and a friend to many more than have posted here. We will remember you always. -Dria
Lively, friendly, energetic, radiant, super intelligent, beautiful... no words can summarize you and your greatness, Doc Oc. Rest in Peace. ~Tobechi
